Black Forest and Rhine Valley – Cross-border model region – The Black Forest is one of Germany’s most important tourist regions and is often associated with cuckoo clocks, Black Forest gateau and fairytales. Today, however, the region is also a dynamic economic area and home to numerous innovative medium-sized companies, some of which are, as so-called hidden champions, world market leaders in their field. Several Black Forest villages are driving forward the energy transition as bioenergy villages and new concepts and an excellent public transport network ensure sustainable tourism. Architects and craftsmen in the region demonstrate the wide range of possible uses for wood as a local and renewable building material, while national parks and biosphere reserves protect the beautiful landscape and create rest areas for flora and fauna.
In addition to the Black Forest, the tri-national Upper Rhine Valley also includes Alsace in France to the west and Northwestern Switzerland to the south. It forms a unique, diverse region in the heart of Europe. This region has long since become a symbol of successful European cooperation and has developed into a competence center for sustainable action.
