Mecca of architecture

Copenhagen – Architectural metropolis and cycling capital Probably no other city is so internationally renowned for climate protection and sustainable urban development. The Danish capital is a true cycling metropolis: more than half of its residents cycle every day, thanks to an extensive network of cycle paths, cycle bridges such as Cykelslangen and well-thought-out infrastructure that prioritizes cyclists.

Adaptation to climate change is also a major focus of urban planning in Copenhagen. Green roofs, infiltration systems and urban watercourses help to cope with heavy rainfall and rising sea levels. Urban space is increasingly being designed for people, with pedestrian zones, green squares and a strong combination of environmental friendliness and aesthetics.

Copenhagen’s architecture and urban planning reflect this approach. The Danish metropolis has long been regarded as a mecca for modern architecture, so it was only logical that it was awarded the title of World Capital of Architecture 2023. One iconic project is CopenHill, a modern incinerator that converts waste into energy while offering a ski slope and recreational areas on its roof – a symbol of the combination of functionality and sustainability.
