Flood Protection and Bioengineering

Increased surface sealing through concrete foundation laying and climate change have consequently increased the risk of flooding. In order to avoid this, people use a combination of roof greening, filtration systems and retention basins which you can visit.

Over the course of 1-2 day seminars, you will learn about the legal basis for flood protection on a European to a municipal level and about their implementation. Excursions will present successfully implemented flood protection measures and bioengineering.

The unique framework of the integrated Rhein program of Baden-Württemberg helped create natural retreat basins along the Rhein river in our region. This was done in order to ensure that underflow in cities like Cologne and Rotterdam would not cause flooding during a flood. Water ecology plays an important role in all areas.
