In 1970, Freiburg created its first bike path plan. Since then the amount of cyclist traffic has risen from 15% to 34%. The 420 km of bicycle friendly routes, over 5,000 bicycle parking places in the inner city, and the Radstation, or bicycle station, at the train station are the main reasons for this growth. With the implementation of the Bicycle Traffic Concept 2020, the bicycle should finally become the main form of transportation. About 30 million Euros are being invested in creating crossing-free, high speed cycling paths in order to equally compare environmentally friendly cycling to automobile traffic.
