The Freiburg Pedestrian Zone

The historical center of Freiburg was mostly destroyed during the Second World War. During the post-war period, however, it was rebuilt at a high cost. Since 1973, the city center consists of a 40 hectare wide pedestrian zone. Thanks to the Freiburg Market and Center Concept, the inner city became a flourishing business district, where street car and a bicycle-based infrastructure are easily accessible. Today, expansion of this inner city network is being implemented, with the remodeling of streets and squares and the installation of a new street car line.

We will guide you through Freiburg’s inner city and, in addition to talking about its historic details, explain its development during the last few decades and future development plans.
