Citizen Participation in Urban Planning

Citizens are experts on their immediate living environment and are therefore are the most important partners in sustainable city-district planning. A well-known example of this citizen participation in Freiburg is in the city district Vauban, which only came into existence as a result of intensive citizen participation. During urban renewal and passive house modernization in the city district during the 1970’s as well as the formulation of the current overall urban perspective of Freiburg, residents played just as important of a role. What can successful citizen participation look like?
