Mobility in Barcelona – a city on the move
Barcelona is one of the most compact cities in Europe and has one of the densest public transport networks on the continent. It is a modern network, perfectly integrated with excellent accessibility, and it is very reasonably priced.
Barcelona has the longest automatic subway network in Europe, spanning 30 kilometers. The city’s entire metro network is 166 kilometers (103 miles) long and consists of twelve lines. In addition, the Catalan capital developed an innovative bus system with horizontal, vertical, and diagonal bus lines.
With the aim of drastically reducing air pollution, Barcelona set up an environmental zone (LEZ) at the beginning of 2020, which extends to suburban areas and reaches an area of more than 100 km² (62mi²).
The plan for so-called superblocks has attracted international attention. The aim is to convert entire residential areas into a largely car-free zone and to radically reduce traffic. The first pilot projects displayed resounding success.
