The Danish capital is a true cycling metropolis: more than half of its residents cycle every day, thanks to an extensive network of cycle paths, cycle bridges such as Cykelslangen and well-thought-out infrastructure that prioritizes cyclists.<\/p>\n

Adaptation to climate change is also a major focus of urban planning in Copenhagen. Green roofs, infiltration systems and urban watercourses help to cope with heavy rainfall and rising sea levels. Urban space is increasingly being designed for people, with pedestrian zones, green squares and a strong combination of environmental friendliness and aesthetics.<\/p>\n

Copenhagen’s architecture and urban planning reflect this approach. The Danish metropolis has long been regarded as a mecca for modern architecture, so it was only logical that it was awarded the title of World Capital of Architecture 2023. One iconic project is CopenHill, a modern incinerator that converts waste into energy while offering a ski slope and recreational areas on its roof – a symbol of the combination of functionality and sustainability.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column]

<\/div>[\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text css=””]Study visit to Copenhagen as part of 3-weeks field trip by UNC.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We are excited that we have been able to organize 2024 a first successful study visit to Copenhagen for a group UNC Chapel Hill. The group led by Prof. Adam Lovelady has spent a full week exploring a variety of topics relating to sustainability through activities including a bike tour through Copenhagen focusing on transportation and bike infrastructure within the city, visits to locations which have been redesigned as part of Copenhagen\u2019s Cloudburst Plan, exploring \u00d6restad, a new development area in Copenhagen, and much more! Thank you to our local colleague Senia and to everyone else in Copenhagen who have helped to make this visit possible. The visit to Copenhagen was part of a 3-weeks field trip to Copenhagen, Hamburg and Freiburg, fully organized by Innovation Academy. Find out more about the entire trip here<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n
